Claiming Dependence

August through September 2026

This five-week series traces how genuine strength, depth, and growth flow not from self-reliance but from dependence on God, modeled by Jesus himself. It opens with "Basic Christianity," establishing that Jesus — the most powerful person who ever lived — was also the most dependent, withdrawing constantly to the Father, and that our own dependence (not independence) determines whether we're "blessed" or "cursed" per Jeremiah 17. "The Paradox of Power" builds on this by showing how Paul boasted in weakness rather than strength, since thorns and hardships deepen dependency, grow character, and let God's power rest on us. "A Person of Depth" argues that depth as a person is inseparable from dependency and discipleship — that following Jesus (not merely believing in him) requires spiritual disciplines like prayer, silence, Scripture, worship, and fasting that turn discipline into delight. "Connected Roots" extends dependency outward into community, using the image of giant sequoias — shallow-rooted but massive because their roots interlock with neighboring trees — to argue that spiritual strength requires being deeply connected to other believers, not just to God individually. The series closes with "Escape," which reframes withdrawal not as avoidance but as the very posture of dependence, since Jesus's pattern of escaping to the Father before and after major moments in his ministry is the model for finding power through surrendered reliance on God rather than self-sufficiency.
