Claiming Dependence | Basic Christianity

August 9, 2026 | Matt Hessel

Week 1 |  Basic Christianity

Self-sufficiency is a myth. We’re conditioned to lean on our own talent, gifts, intellect, resources, and control — treating independence as a value to protect. But true faith, and true thriving, means surrendering the illusion that we can do this on our own and acknowledging God’s sovereignty instead.

Independence has become our modern golden calf — the very thing Israel bowed to and declared, “Here, Israel, is the god that brought you out of Egypt.” We don’t call it an idol, but the posture is the same: trusting something we built with our own hands over the God who actually delivers us.
